چکیده

We present a framework for semi-automatically acquiring domain knowledge necessary for building lightweight, application ontologies. The approach adopts active learning for semantic annotation of knowledge roles that have been derived from the CommonKADS methodology. We discuss the framework advantages by implementing a lightweight, application ontology for a knowledge management application in a technical domain.

Populating an Allergens Ontology Using Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning Techniques

Ontologies are becoming increasingly important in the biomedical domain since they enable the re-use and sharing of knowledge in a formal, homogeneous and unambiguous way. In the rapidly growing field of biomedicine, knowledge is usually evolving and therefore an ontology maintenance process is required to keep the ontological knowledge up-to-date. This paper presents our approach for populatin...

IR and AI: Using co-occurrence Theory to Generate Lightweight Ontologies

This paper illustrated the application of cooccurrence theory to generate lightweight ontologies semi-automatically. First, the relationship of Information Retrieval (IR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) is discussed in a general way. Then two case studies have been conducted to generate lightweight ontologies in specific domains (Information Retrieval domain and European part of CIA FactBook)....

Template Driven Information Extraction for Populating Ontologies

We address the integration of information extraction (IE) and ontologies. In particular, using an ontology to aid the IE process, and using the IE results to help populate the ontology. We perform IE by means of domain speci c templates and the lightweight use of Natural Languages Processing techniques (NLP). Our main goal is to learn information from text by the use of templates and in this wa...

An Instance-based Approach for Identifying Candidate Ontology Relations within a Multi-Agent System

Discovering related concepts in a multi-agent system among agents with diverse ontologies is difficult using existing knowledge representation languages and approaches. We describe an approach for identifying candidate relations between expressive, diverse ontologies using concept cluster integration. We evaluate the feasibility of this approach using lightweight ontologies. These lightweight o...

Reference Ontologies - Application Ontologies: Either/Or or Both/And?

The distinction between reference ontologies and application ontologies crept rather unobtrusively into the recent literature on knowledge engineering. A lot of the discourse surrounding this distinction – notably, the one framing the workshop generating this collection of papers – suggests the two types of ontologies are in some sort of opposition to one another. Thus, Borge et al. [3] charact...
